Busy boy

Well, I've been flat out the last couple of months doing weddings! I haven't had a chance to even think about my blog, for which I am sorry to those who like to check up on what's happening.

I've had many great weddings, and worked with some wonderful people. I have also started the process of changing the name of the business to Greaves Art. A little confusing when you go to the Luke Greaves Photography site I know, and I'm sorry if you've been confused, or if I am confusing you now!

Here's a little shot from Mandy and Denny's wedding, I liked this one a lot.

Winter 2011

I love the winter season in photography- except for the freezing cold water that gives you double leg cramps making you cry like a baby as all the surfers you are shooting look on unable to do a thing......

Other than that, it's a time to rest from wedding photography which will fire up soon and develop the skills a little.

One of the highlights was shooting the Kylie Minogue concert for a magazine a few weeks back. There were some interesting characters there that's for sure! But it was quite fun and a great experience.

What's coming up??

For the last 9 years I have been doing a lot of personal writing on the side. I have had a huge project on my mind and I am wanting to combine the writing with a photographic story for an exhibition and eventually a book.

Photography is an art for me before a business, but often we can focus on keeping clients happy that we can lose some artistic flare. I want my creativity to be the element that not only points to my work but also greater things than photography.

I want my work and life to express things and to reveal things.

But also to change things.

My other desire is to start seminars in schools next year, maybe even throughout the country, to use photography as a tool in explaining about image. How you see yourself (your image) will be what you reflect in your life.

One thing I do better than photography is public speaking. I want to inspire people to have a good image of themselves, what better way than to use photography as the medium? Because who doesn't love photography?

So this months blog is less about what I've done and more about what I'm going to do. It's time to start looking forward. Life is too short to look back or look at everyone else's lane. I want my work to have meaning- this was the whole reason why I started my business in the first place!

I think that's why I love photographing people over anything else these days- especially weddings and anything else that people will value for years to come.

I did a shoot for a huge Dance production that was raising money for cancer research at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. It was a great couple of days and the results of the night were amazing. If you're interested just click on the photo below for the link!

Modern times

I've been loving shooting the old film cameras lately, just to get inspired again about what photography is all about. Kind of like going back to the roots. I've got several old cameras I've been playing with and experimenting with the exposures. I think it's a good sign when the bloke developing your photos is so amped on them they tell you to keep shooting how you're doing it. I'm wanting to incorporate film into the weddings and other shoots I've been doing to stay in touch with what photography used to be about. Here's one of the shots from the Easter long weekend, when I was so busy shooting for everyone else, I did a shot of a friends daughter for the sake of taking a photo for the beauty of taking a photo and not for someone else or for business. I think these are always the best photos! The beautiful thing about film is we can't edit them, it's one chance to get it right, and you're so excited to get them developed to see the results! The good 'ol days!

Portraits and Dreads

Here's Matt. Matt is a champ. I've been wanting to do a few more portraits as the wedding season slows down for winter. I've got some personal projects on the way, which I'm really looking forward to, but for the mean time I'm simply trying to hone the skills towards portraits of people who do great things. Matt and Conor are two who blokes who live for others.

Conor also has dreadlocks. I am starting a series of documenting people with dreads. I want as many portraits as I can, so if you know anyone who is keen let me know!

I have dreads myself, so this may be part of the inspiration, but not the whole reason. I think it's because people either love or hate dreads. I want to interview people about why they have them and what sort of character it takes to sport the style.

Should be fun. Will take years, but you never know, I may even write a book one day?

Here's Conor in all his dreadlock glory!

Business is starting to crank with lots of projects and shoots coming up.
I have a personal project I am working on, but it will be at least a year in the making. It is involving portraits, so I am looking for more people to work with. Let me know if you're keen for a portrait and we can go from there. Simply send me an email which you can find on the contact page.

On a recent night out, I was fortunate to work with amazing photographer Joel Durbridge. We spent a few hours roaming Adelaide and just enjoying looking for spots. Here's one I set up and asked Joel to press the shutter. So I guess you could call it a self portrait!

The one above was just down the street and has been completely untouched.

I'm trying to mix up the photography, trying different things with different people. We can learn from everyone.

I am also wanting to connect with other photographers, to discuss ideas and work with to draw strengths from each other. Plus it's good to have backup photographers when doing important shoots like weddings. Please contact me if you fit in this category!

Special shout out to Linda Byrkmore for her guess of my childhood artistic inspiration!
